Centre for European and Transition Studies (CETS)
www.lu.lv/cets
Latvia is in the process of deeper integration in the European Union, a task which embrace virtually all aspects of daily life, a task which is long term and the results should be analysed. It is evident that higher education and research must also respond to the challenges and effects of European Union enlargement - as well as to the challenges, rather unique to Latvia, of being a neighbour to countries, which cannot in the foreseeable future be expected to join the EU. To meet these challenges and to establish a forum for dealing with them the Centre for European and Transition Studies started its activities in the beginning of the year 2000 at the University of Latvia. Its objectives are:
1. To promote and support research and teaching in areas relevant to Latvia`s place and future in Europe.
2. To promote and support both interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary activities.
3. To support both academic as well as applied research.
4. To involve students engaged in postgraduate / advanced studies in the constituent disciplines in the research activities of the Centre.
5. To promote the dissemination of research through working papers, seminars and conferences.
The Centre is an independent institution of the University of Latvia under the auspices of the Vice-Rector. Because of its interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary character, the Centre is an independent institution within the University structure. It welcomes collaboration with the members of any Faculty.
