he Open Estonia Foundation (OEF) is a non-governmental not-for-profit foundation that was established in April 1990 with the support of the Hungarian-born American philanthropist George Soros. The mission of the foundation was to create conditions for the development of an open society in Estonia. Our programs are driven by a vision of democracy, civil society, social responsibility, and equal opportunities in the democratic decision making process.
Up to date, the grants provided and the projects initiated by the OEF exceed 400 m Estonian kroons. Our activities have ranged from kindergartens and the schools reform to contemporary art, help for the aged and legal reform. Today, our focus is on building a stronger Europe, strengthening of the civil society, and sharing experiences of transition as well as reinforcing principles of participatory democracy and equality.
Open Estonia Foundation initiates programs and projects itself as well as in co-operation with other organisations. OEF also conducts open grant and scholarship competitions.
