The Institute of Strategic and International Studies (IEEI - Instituto de Estudos Estartegicos e Internacionais) was established in 1980 as an independent and not-for profit organization dedicated to the research and debate on international issues, focusing on aspects such as politics, military, economics, social matters, culture and information.
In 26 years of activity, IEEI found its grounds as the main Portuguese research centre for international relations, rising awareness for the study and debate in this field. IEEI makes efforts in the integration of the growing number of International Relations students in the Portuguese universities. They are the majority of our staff and in 1994 the institute started with a traineeship programme as well.
IEEI organises an average of four or five congresses and seminars yearly, attended by high-profile international experts. As a policy-oriented institute, IEEI has always promoted the participation of experts, policy-makers, military representatives, diplomats, politicians, journalists, students and businessmen. This goal has been kept since the beginning of the organisation, and has definitely been one of the reasons for the success of the institute’s initiatives and good results.
Currently, IEEI’s activities are focused on the following areas: Europe, Mediterranean and Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Asia. The main fields of investigation are: integration and regional cooperation; international and inter-regional cooperation; extern, security and defence policy (both at European and Portuguese level); democratic transition, security and stability.
