Created in 1963, the Institute for European Studies of the ULB (IEE) is one of the oldest research and teaching establishment totally dedicated to the study of the European Union. Some thirty ULB professors participate in the Institute’s programmes, along with several external scientific collaborators.
Each year, the Institute welcomes a dozen visiting researchers and lectures from other Universities in Europe and worldwide. It has awarded over 4,500 specialised degrees in European law, economics, history and politics, in its forty five years of operation. T here are many Institute alumni in European institutions, national and international public services, the private sector, academia and the media. The Institute is proud to count among its alumni a former European Commissioner, two members of the European Court of Justice, several Members of the European Parliament and several national Ministers.
The Institute’s research programs are funded by the European Union, several international organisations, federal and regional Belgian authorities. For example, the Institute is a member of the 44 university strong GARNET network of Excellence (European Union and Global Governance) financed by the EU’s 6th Framework Programme. Since 2005, the Institute has played an active role in the NESCA programme involving 5 European universities and 10Chinese, Japanese and other Eastern Asian institutions specialised in European studies.
Many debates on the state of the Union take place within the Institute. Twenty or so colloquiums are organized within its walls every year, as well as numerous seminars, public debates and conferences.
MASTERS & COMPLEMENTARY MASTERS Each year, the Institute hosts some 200 full-time Master’s students coming from forty different countries. Admission is based on strictly academic criteria. The courses and seminars within each Masters Program are taught in English and in French by an international Faculty, gathering high-level academics, lawyers and first-rank civil servants from EU institutions and other international organisations.
The Institute organises 3 full-time Master degrees (MA) of one- or two-year duration:
- European Economics
- European History and Cultures
- European Politics
The Institute organises 2 full-time Complementary Masters (MC) of one-year duration:
- European Law
- Multidisciplinary Analyses of European Construction
POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES Two postgraduate programmes are organised for professionally active students working within or around the European Institutions:
- Executive Master in European Studies (M.E.U.S.)
- Certificate in European Law On Immigration and Asylum
