The Department of Political and Social Studies was established in 1983, following the merger of five Institutes (smaller Departments), namely, the Institute of Sociology, the Institute of History and Political Thought, the Institute of International Historical and Political Studies, the Institute of History and Institutions of African and Asian Countries, and the Institute of Political and Social Studies.
Currently the Department is organised into five groups (sezioni):
- Political Science
- Sociology
- History of Political Thought and Political Institutions
- African and Asian Studies
- Historical Studies and International Politics
The first Head of Department was Prof. Paolo Beonio Brocchieri (1983-1986), followed by Prof. Alessandro Cavalli (1986-1992), Prof. Giacomo Sani (1992-1998), Prof. Antonio Mutti (1998-2001) and Prof. Gian Paolo Calchi Novati (2001-2006) and Antonio Mutti (2006-2009).
The Department participates in the following doctoral programmes:
- Philosophy
- Institutions, Ideas and Political Movements in Contemporary Europe
- Political Science: Comparative Analysis of Democracies
Sociology
- History of International Relations
The Department’s professors and researchers teach in undergraduate and graduate programmes at the Faculties of Political Science, Economics, Humanities and Medicine, as well as in multi faculty programmes and special programmes at the University Institute of Advanced Studies (Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori), and at the European Schools of Advanced Studies.
The Department supports with its funds the Political Sciences Faculty Library.
The sezioni of Political Science, History of Political Thought and Political Institutions, African and Asian Studies, and Historical Studies and International Politics are located in the central University building (address: Corso Strada Nuova, 65). The sezione of Sociology, the office of Head of Department, the administrative offices and the EDP office are located in via Luino, 12, near Ghislieri College and Giasone del Maino College.
