About the Speech: After the 2009 general election the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) became the ruling party in the House of Representatives, and thereby ended half a century of rule by the Liberal Democratic Party. The new government intends to change the political system itself and wishes to establish Japan as a politically more responsive entity in the world. But its relations with the United States have become a complicating factor, along with bureaucratic resistance. Karel van Wolferen will address the Institute on the implications for Japan's foreign policy and its economy.
