About the Event: Dr. Balas will provide an analysis of the current state of play of the EU-China trade relationship. He will focus in particular on the challenge of the protection of the intellectual property rights of companies operating in China, a challenge recognized by President Barosso in the recent EU2020 proposal. This issue is also been addressed through the EU-China project on the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR2) (2007-2011). At the end of April 2010, President Barosso will undertake a trade mission to China accompanied by a large number of recently appointed Commissioners, including Karel de Gucht, demonstrating the continued importance of this trade relationship. About the Speaker: Dr. Balas took up his current position in DG Trade in 2005. Before joining the European institutions, he was Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Hungary to the World Trade Organisation (2002-2005). He served in a range of high-level positions in the Hungarian institutions, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Trade.
