Raising biopreparedness levels in Europe

Protecting European citizens from infectious disease outbreaks, be they natural or terrorism-related, has never been so important, as health scares multiply and fears grow that biological agents may fall into the wrong hands. Progress has been made at the European level, but a streamlined approach has yet to be developed. It is now time to assess existing mechanisms and regulations and find a way forward towards a common strategy on biopreparedness in Europe, equipped with adequate tools to prepare for and respond to both pandemics and bioterrorist attacks.
