Today's UK: A Federal Embryo?

17/11/2009
Organiser : Federal Trust for Education & Research (United Kingdom)
Conference

Tuesday, 17th November

31 Jewry Street, 4.00 for 4.30 pm until 7.00pm.

The event will mark the launch of a new Federal Trust pamphlet by Dr Andrew Blick, Devolution and Regional Administration: A Federal UK in Embryo? It will be the first in a series to discuss key aspects of the changing UK constitution.

The conference will provide a forum for discussion of the devolution programmes across the UK as a whole, as well as arrangements for the English regions; and the extent to which these various settlements can be seen as amounting to progress towards a federal United Kingdom.

The programme is as follows:

4.30 - 5.30 pm Dr Andrew Blick, the Federal Trust, will give an overview of the possible progress towards a federal UK and Professor Charlie Jeffrey, University of Edinburgh, will discuss the case of Scotland.

5.30 - 6.00 pm Tea

6.00 - 7.00 pm Professor Elizabeth Meehan, Queen's University Belfast, and Dr Richard Wyn Jones, University of Cardiff, will give their views of progress in, respectively, Northern Ireland and Wales

7.00 pm Drinks reception, all welcome to attend.

The development of federal government is of particular interest at the present time and we believe that all four of our speakers have much to contribute to the debate.
