The Effect of the Economic Crisis on Merger Control

About the Speaker:
Nadia Calviño has been the Deputy Director General with responsibility for Mergers and Antitrust in DG Competition in the European Commission since September 2006. Prior to that she was a civil servant in Spain where she worked for nine years in the field of competition policy. She worked first as an antitrust case handler, then as Deputy Director General for Legal Affairs, and finally as Director General for Competition. She has published many articles and papers on topics involving mergers and antitrust legislation.

About the Speech:
As the economy continues on the path to recovery from the recent financial crisis, the European Commission has been presented with a new and difficult task. While fewer applications for mergers have been received, the Commission has instead been faced with many complex mergers as industries restructure. In this context, Nadia Calviño will speak on the effect the current economic downturn has had on merger control, including how the Commission has had to change its merger review policies in the face of economic crisis.
