Better NATO-EU relations
require more sincerity
A new EDAM Discussion Paper
published with the support of The German Marshall Fund of the United States
(GMF) examines the challenges in front of a better NATO-EU co-operation.
Although there is already a structure for the functioning of such co-operation,
the substantial challenges are not to be underestimated. Contrary to the common
view that Turkey is the main obstacle for deepening the relationship in
question, this article shows various difficulties involved on the part of both
the EU and United States, as well as laying out the basic reasons for Turkey's
disappointment with the European Security and Defense Policy-ESDP. One of the
ways to overcome both Turkey's disenchantment and flaws of NATO-EU co-operation
is to ensure that the NATO Strategic Concept and European Security Strategy
complement each other and develop genuine consultation mechanisms for non-EU
allies to the ESDP, such as Turkey.
