Unsubstantiated rumours that Algeria was allowing food, fuel and
weapons, let alone mercenaries to help an embattled Mouammar Gaddafi
have surfaced repeatedly in western media in recent months. Algerian
leaders seem to have been wrong footed from the moment last March when
they voted against the Arab League resolution that endorsed NATO’s
action in support of the Libyan rebels to their decision last month to
allow members of Gaddafi’s family who are subject to UN decreed travel
bans to enter the country.
