The Institute for Security and Development Policy is an independent, Stockholm-based non-profit research and policy institute. The Institute is dedicated to expanding understanding of international affairs, particularly the interrelationship between conflict, security, and development. Its primary areas of geographic focus are Asia and Europe’s neighborhood.

The Institute includes two major geographic programs as well as a number of thematic projects and initiatives. The two programs are the Asia Program and the Silk Road Studies Program – the latter constituting a Joint Center with the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute, Johns Hopkins University-SAIS.

ISDP aims to be at the forefront of research on issues of
conflict, security, and development, and to function as a
focal point for academic, policy, and public discussion of
Asia and the European neighborhood through its applied
research, publications, research cooperation, public lectures, and seminars.

MISSION AND AGENDA

Research
ISDP fosters both fundamental and applied research in a wide range of disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, with a focus on issues of conflict, security, and development. This research ranges from short-term research projects involving a sole researcher to larger, multiyear cooperative endeavors involving numerous researchers. Research is undertaken mainly at the institute’s premises, but often includes sponsoring research in the field.

Publications
ISDP issues a wide range of publications, from shorter Policy Briefs to books and monographs. Our paper series include Asia Papers, Silk Road Papers, and Stockholm Papers, as well as shorter Policy Briefs on timely
subjects. ISDP publishes about 4-6 books and 10-20 papers per year. ISDP also publishes three periodicals roughly corresponding to our main geographic regions of interest: the China and Eurasia Forum Quarterly, the Turkey Analyst (biweekly), and the Central-Asia Caucasus Analyst (biweekly). There are also two weekly newsletters covering the Korean Peninsula and China/PLA respectively.

Forums and Conferences
The Institute regularly organizes forums, conferences, and seminars concerning its core research areas. Distinguished scholars and researchers are invited to speak on timely and topical subjects at our forums. These forums are open to the public, being well-attended by policy-makers,
researchers, diplomatic staff, and graduate students. Conferences and seminars are sponsored by core funding as well as project funding.

Visiting Fellows
The Institute receives scholars in Stockholm, either as Fellows or Guest Scholars. Visitors carry out research leading to monographs and papers published by ISDP, as well as articles, policy papers, or presentations in various media. Every year, the Institute hosts about 25 scholars
from Europe, Asia, and North America. Visiting periods range from a few weeks to a year or more, with visits funded by ISDP, collaborating institutions, or sponsors.
