FACES OF TUBERCULOSIS - SOUTH AFRICA

Cape Town-based South African photographer Damien Schumann travelled through South Africa to capture photos of patients with MDR-TB, their communities and the outreach workers and health professionals that care for them.

In South Africa, TB is the leading killer of youths and adults, and HIV/TB co-infection is a major problem. About 44% of all TB patients are HIV positive. There are around 453,000 new TB cases every year and 20,000 deaths annually. An estimated 1.8% (8,000) of all new TB cases are MDR-TB.

Figure 1.  This lady (33) first got TB in 2003. She completed her treatment. In 2007 she was diagnosed with MDR-TB; she was also found to be HIV positive, as was her husband and oldest child. After 6 months she interrupted her treatment. This meant that her son (age 7) who she is responsible for also interrupted his HIV and MDR-TB treatment.

She  and her husband are unemployed. Her husband had to quit his job in a fast food restaurant after he developed a problem with his knees related to HIV and could not stand for the duration of the working day. They now rely on grants as their only source of income.
