FACES OF TUBERCULOSIS - CHINA

Beijing-based photographer Song Hangjian took to the streets and workplaces of his country to randomly ask people their knowledge about tuberculosis. The photo selection can be described as “Belief or Myths,” as the responses poignantly demonstrate general public knowledge about the disease.

China has the second highest number of TB cases in the world, with 4.5 million people living with pulmonary TB. There are 1.4 million new cases every year and 130,000 deaths annually. An estimated five percent (65,000) of all new TB cases are MDR-TB.

With the help of Paul Thorn, author of TB tips, and officials at the WHO, Lilly has included TB facts (in red) that either correct presented myths or provide the reader with additional information.

I read about TB in a newspaper. Patients need to drink lots of water and exercise often.
Drinking water and exercising is not more of a need for TB patients than for anyone else.
